Ride a Harley / Play Chicken on a Hammond Organ
Posted in For Your EntertainmentThis video is me playing a Hammond Organ at a gig at the Yale Hotel in Vancouver with a band called the Indestructibles. The song is called the Chicken. It’s a standard kind of jazz/blues tune where everyone plays the “head” (signature melody line) a couple of times in the beginning of the song, and again then at the end. Each musician besides bass & drums, takes a solo. All the solos are improvised. Improvising is a lot like using the Law of Attraction. It’s totally about reacting in the moment, to the sounds and motifsi that are being passed back & forth. In this video, you can also see Brian Newcombe (bass), Darrell Mayes (drums), Tim Hearsey pokes his head in (guitar) and there’s also an excellent solo by Derry Byrne (trumpet). This is a Hammond A-100 I’m playing in this song. (Same as a B-3, just different wood) I LOVE playing Hammonds. It’s a lot like riding a Harley Davidson, because they can be so beautiful & loud. But Hammonds can also sound very soft and pretty. Thankfully, this organ belongs to the Yale and that means i don’t have to cartwheel a 400lb beast up the basement stairs of my home. The A-100 I own is almost identical.
