The Polar Bear Swim, or the Penguin Walk?
Posted in For Your EntertainmentA few years ago, my buddy Don and I made it to Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim. That’s an annual Jan 1st event where about 20,000 people run out & jump into the near freezing waters off English Bay, for as long as they can stand it. I’ve seen some people last 20 minutes.. After that, it’s just foolish. How cold do you think the water gets? Cold enough to hide your you-know-whats, completely inside your body.
Anyway. Jacob kind of dared me to walk outside in bare feet, and I dared him back. Sue caught it on tape. We didn’t last very long, but it was long enough for our feet to go numb, and cause us to walk funny back into the house. Jacob suggested we call it the Penguin Walk, and make it a yearly tradition. He is teaching me how to be cool. That’s going to come in handy for the next couple of decades.
After we made the video, I realized why penguins walk funny. Their feet are frozen. Go ahead, try walking with frozen feet and see if you look like a penguin waddling.
