Elevator Pitch 1
Posted in How ToThis is a quick video I took of my friend Steve Tarp. It’s night time, in the parking lot of the hockey rink we play at, right after our Monday session. We’d just gotten our Flip Camera, and I had just found out Steve’s quite a marketing wiz kid. I dared him to show me his 30 second pitch, and poof, there he was.
I love how easy it was for him to quickly explain the premise of his company. He is completely relaxed and focused. I’ve never been able to rattle off a perfect speech like that. My way has always been to show the passion I feel about a subject, and hopefully attract some interested people. Lots of my friends believe me to be quite a confident person, but the elevator pitch has eluded me. Maybe it’s because I never had anything to sell that required distilling into 30 seconds?….
The “elevator pitch” is a term I heard about at the last Taxi Rally. It means when you get the opportunity to ride an elevator with a music mogul (or someone you’ve wanted to do business with) be prepared to speak quickly and engagingly about your product, before the elevator door opens. After 2 Taxi Rally Conferences in LA, I don’t know if I’ll ever be the kind of person that walks up to someone I don’t know, and convinces them to do business with me. But I am in awe of my friend’s Steve Tarp’s performance. I bet that guy could sell absolutely anything.
For years, I have believed that the world opportunities are first awarded to the people that show the most confidence. Of course that’s not true, but I always felt that way growing up. It was my way of keeping myself separate, and pretending that what I do shouldn’t be sold by attaching confidence or advertising to it. What a crock, designed (by me) to keep a starving artist starving. I’ll be 49 this year. I have finally attained a new level of going after what I want in life, instead of doing a good job and waiting for the phone to ring. Glad I’m still learning. Another thing that I have learned about this confidence thing is, people are attracted to me (and Sue), even tho I don’t carry myself the same as Steve Tarp. So the sueandsteveshow is an ideal way for us to attract an audience, which is what we’ve been doing well at all our lives. And after decades of feeling like I’d never make any money because I couldn’t do the elevator pitch as well as my friend Steve Tarp, I completely now realize that what Sue and I are doing to attract success, is PERFECTLY suited to our style. It’s kind of a “be careful what you wish” for end reverse, that took 30 years. I’m finally happy with me, and now!
And wanttobee.com is probably a fabulous idea for anyone who is trying to figure what to do next with their lives. Check it out, maybe you’ll get some grand new ideas, or want to see if his company can help you.
