$20,000 This morning I decided to google $20,000 gifts. I’m always stoked to see what I’ll learn. This is a great gift for ecologically minded philanthropists. I was born and raised not far away from Newfoundland. My Dad was in the military, we moved around the Maritimes a lot, growing up. I mention Newfoundland here because that’s one of the example’s that the link below talks about. It’s a wonderful program aimed at helping to protect land by making giving people tax deductions. Spend $20,000 on a tax deductible gift to the environment and some lucky souls that need financial help? Gladly!

The Ecological Gifts Program
What is an ecogift?

An ecogift is a donation of land or an interest in land – such as a conservation easement, covenant or servitude – that has been certified as “ecologically sensitive” according to specific national and provincial criteria. Generally speaking, ecologically sensitive lands are areas or sites that currently, or could in the future, significantly contribute to the conservation of Canada’s biodiversity and environmental heritage.
Donation and Income Tax Scenarios

CANADA’S ECOLOGICAL GIFTS PROGRAM provides a way for Canadians who own ecologically sensitive land to protect nature and create a legacy for future generations. Since 1995, the Program has offered enhanced income tax benefits to encourage landowners to donate land or a partial interest in land–a conservation easement, covenant, or servitude–to an approved recipient. Recipients ensure that the biodiversity and natural heritage values of these properties are conserved in perpetuity.

Many donors who make ecological gifts, or ecogifts, do not do so for monetary reasons, as the financial benefits of selling a piece of property often exceed those of giving it away. Rather, they take comfort in knowing that their land will be cared for in the future by an organization that shares their conservation values.
